Basic Facts
What should we know about people who have hemophilia?
- Hemophilia is a sexlinked diease in which the blood doesn't clot normally.
- People with hemophilia are called hemophiliacs.
- Hemophiliacs can bleed internally or externally.
- The body parts that are mostly affected are the joints.
- Hemophilia was not discovered by one person but by several individuals.
- There are lots of societies that are working towards fundraising money for the hemophiliacs.
A word from the expert.
Listed below is a question that reports kept asking the doctor (future Dr.Gonzalez).
How would you feel if you or your future child had this disorder?
I would feel astonished because I didn't know or realized I had that flawed X chromosome until my child was born. Of course I wouldn't regret having my child because no matter how he looked or how he acted he is still my baby. I would encourage him and I wouldn't treat him any different than the rest. Of course, I would have to be more precaution and be prepared to act. Even if my child wouldn't want me to tell his teachers, it is something I would have to do without his concern; in other words without his permission. I would have to know that my child is in good hands, and if something were to happen, someone would be there to lift him up. Overall, I think I would feel scared that my child could leave me any minute. I wouldn't be able to go to sleep without knowing if I will ever see my child again. I would be terrified, but of course wouldn't let my child know that. I would love my child just the same as I would love my rest. The most important of all is that I wouldn't change him or anything in the world. I would love him just the way he is.
Do you see a cure or better treatment for the future? Why/why not?
No, believe it or not I don't think that we (the doctors) are going to find a cure for hemophilia anytime soon. If I could come up with it just like that, the population of hemophiliacs would have already dropped drastically. No matter how much any doctor wants to find that cure, we just haven't been able to. No matter how much I want to be lying to you, there is one thing we can't forget. Hemophilia is a sex linked disease. It a recessive gene that hides within lots of females. If we were to find a cure, we would not only have to receive thousands of hemophiliacs, but we would have to go searching for all those females carriers so that hemophilia wouldn't start spreading again.
